"He is determined to get better"

About: Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust / Mardon Neuro-Rehabilitation Centre

(as a parent/guardian),

My son had a diving accident and broke his neck later leading to a stroke and meningitis. He was living and working In London when he swallow dived into a shallow pond late at night. His life was saved by the efforts of his friend and the London Ambulance Paramedics both performing CPR. He had a badly broken neck in 2 places and had 0 lung function. Shortly after an operation to stabilise his neck he suffered a catastrophic stroke and was expected to die but after 10 months in a trauma hospital and countless operations, he went to Bristol to a level 1 rehab. After 6 months he came to Exeter (Mardon) where he has been for 1 year.

I felt devastated and heartbroken (and still do) as his injuries were severe and life changing. Especially, as he was so young with his whole ahead of him. However, he has made slow but steady progress and is working as hard as he can to continue to progress as he is determined to get better and maybe one day walk again against the odds! He has so far learnt to breathe again after 10 months, eat and talk again after 1 and a half years and stand after 2 so we are not giving up hope!

Dear Attendantmt78

Thank you for taking the time to leave such detailed feedback. I can only imagine what a difficult and emotional journey this has been, both for your son and yourself.

It is good to hear that you son is now making slow and steady progress. As the clinical nurse manager of Mardon, please do let me or a member of the team know if there is anything further we can do to support you both on the recovery journey.

Thank you again for taking the time to leave feedback.

Best wishes

Sharon
