I had quite a long and traumatic labour where my baby was back to back with me. I laboured for well over a day but unfortunately only made it to 9cm dilated and was eventually given an emergency csection, where I lost over a pint of blood. Whilst I felt well taken care of by the labour ward and also had a good experience with my csection, I was still left feeling confused and scared about what had happened to me and was very happy to get to discuss my labour and birth with a midwife.
The lovely midwife Libby took lots of time explaining my notes to me, took me through what lead up to and after my csection and used simple language to help me and my husband understand medical terms. Libby listened to my concerns and answered all the questions I had for her. Before I had talked with the midwife I had a lot of worries that there was possibly something wrong with my body that caused issues with the birth and worries about having another child in the future but I felt very reassured by Libby and her explanations helped us piece together exactly what had happened and why it had happened.
My husband and I, during labour and csection at the time had felt that we didnt really know what was going on and the csection had felt very sudden and scary to us, but Libby was quick to reassure us and explain that everything was in hand behind the scenes.
Libby was also able to give me some ideas of what might be available to me in the future should I decide to have another baby (possibly extra growth scans etc) which made me feel more at ease.
I think this service is fabulous and hope it continues to be funded for all mothers in the future. I feel that whilst the hospital during labour/delivery does try their best to explain things to patients, it can often be too much to take in at the time and that's why a service like this is so needed. Once you have time to process your birth it raises lots of questions. I know that before I had this appointment I had felt that I would not want to have another baby for fear of having the same experience, but after this appointment I now feel reassured and that this is not likely to happen again. Many thanks to Libby for her time, understanding and kindness.
