"A shining example of true passionate carers"

About: Waterside Hospital / Ward 3 Western Health & Social Care Trust / Dementia companion service

(as a service user),

Just want to share a very happy report on behalf of two Dementia companions operating in Ward 3 of Waterside hospital, Derry.

Madelyn and Josephine both have impressed me by the manner in which they have been treating the patients,  including my sister. Their example is exemplary and they both have no hesitation in going the extra mile, over and above what is required of them.

A shining example of true passionate carers. I would have no hesitation in recommending either of them highly in the service that they have been called to. It's good to know that my sister is in very capable hands.

Thank you both for your gentle and sincere care to my sister and all the patients. It doesn't go unnoticed.

Dear Bosco2013,

My name is Jenny Mullan and I am the Head of Service and Lead Nurse for the Waterside Hospital Bed Based Intermediate Care Services.

Thank you for sharing your experience on the role of our Dementia companions'. We are absolutely delighted to have both colleagues provide support our patients on ward 3.

They are an invaluable resource for our ward based teams in providing activities to patients during their recovery and really do make the day so much shorter with all the activities and fun provided.

Many thanks Again

Dear Bosco2013

My name is Nicola Hayes and my substantive post is Dementia Service Improvement Lead for Acute Hospitals and I manage the Dementia Companion Team.

Thank you for your feedback story 'A shining example of true passionate carers' and thank you for taking the time to post this story at a time when your Sister was not at her best health.

I am glad to hear of the positive experience that you and your Sister had of the journey through Ward 3, Waterside Hospital.

Coming into hospital can be a fearful and stressful time for any of us, never mind for someone living with dementia and in your Sister's case, it is great to hear the positive impact that the Dementia Companions had with the care provided.

The care and treatment provided is essential to ensure that any hospital journey is person centred, particularly with your Sister’s health at that time. Providing that individualised care is what makes the Dementia Companion Team so special and I agree, Madelyn and Josephine will go that ‘extra mile’ if it means providing care that is unique to an individual to make their hospital stay anyway less stressful and fearful and it is great to hear that it hasn’t gone ‘unnoticed’.

What you have witnessed with Madelyn and Josephine is the core of the Dementia Companion Team and the values that we promote as a team. I am delighted that you and your family had the experience of the Dementia Companion Team and the role that they can play with people living with dementia who are admitted to our acute hospitals. I will share this post with Madelyn and Josephine and their fellow Dementia Companions, which they all will be delighted to receive.

May I thank you again for taking the time to share your experiences with us on care opinion.

Your feedback is very welcome to ensure safe, effective, compassionate and well led care is delivered.

Best Wishes

Nicola
