My elderly mother was was admitted into AU1 at the Kirkcaldy Victoria Hospital overnight recently. Initially via Ambulance into A&E with an acute and worsening episode of back pain. I cannot fault the treatment from both the Ambulance crew and staff in A&E at the Victoria Hospital. However, once my mother was admitted into AU1, the overall care given dramatically declined. So far as to the point that she was left unattended for 5 hours after admission without any form of pain relief, suffering considerably. This part is not the worst of my complaint.
During her stay she felt a staff member instantly wasn't very nice and abrupt to all patients in the bay. During my Mother's stay my sister and I both kept in contact with my Mum's condition via telephone calls. This aspect worsened later. I then went to visit my Mum in the hospital 2 days later at approx. 1915. As i went into the bay that she was in I noticed that she wasn't there, so i enquired with a N/A who looked it up for me and said my Mum had just been transferred to Glenrothes Hospital, no more that 15-20mins prior to me arriving.
Concern 1: As stated above. It would appear that no pain management was given for the 4-6 hours of when my Mum arrived in AU1.
Concern 2: No one had even attempted to call my sister or myself to advise either of us of the transfer. I understand it was a late decision and these things are bed driven.
Concern 3: Equally and more alarming to me is that she was not administered any form of pain relief prior to the movement and transfer to GH. This created a considerable amount of distress, pain and worry for my Mum who has a high pain threshold but clearly her pain wasn't being appropriately and suitably managed at this point?! Where was putting the patient first along with patient care and well-being.
Can I ask why did this happen without any discussion and confirmation with the family? I clearly wasted a journey from my house to Kirkcaldy, that would have only taken me less than 5 mins if I had known about the move.
I'm naturally very concerned about these points that I've raised around my Mother - however, what worries me most is I don't think that this is an isolated incident. All staff in the NHS work very hard and I genuinely hate to write this complaint, in my 16 years working in the NHS, this is my first -ever.
Please can you assure me that no one shall be treated in the same way as my mother was. Patient care was non existent at vital times.
"Terrible care for my elderly mother"
