"Poor hospital food"

About: University Hospital Monklands / Emergency Department University Hospital Monklands / Respiratory Medicine (Ward 17)

(as a relative),

My wife was admitted to Monklands Hospital in the early hours of the morning. After 45 hours of being moved around various parts of A&E and MRU and AMRU, she got a bed on ward 17 (Respiratory ward).

I would like to point out that she did recieve an good, attentive standard of care during this time. Whilst waiting on a ward bed, she was offered various meals and sandwiches at the designated meal times, but her appetite wasn't the uppermost thing on her mind and she took the odd sandwich and cup of soup that was offered.

Once up on the ward, she selected various meals throughout her stay(one week) and of all the meals she selected only 2 of the meals could she actually eat. The standard/quality of the food was appalling. The next meal was more unappealing than the one before and it became a topic of amusing discussion as to how bad the food actually was.

On a few occasions the actual food served didn't appear to be cooked properly, for example, the chips were totally undercooked, as if they had had a warm wash, cold and "wet" and rock hard in the middle.

On another occasion, she selected potatoes with an omelette, and they were swimming with grease and really disgusting. That's just two examples, but very little of the food offered appeals to the eye. If something looks unappetising and smells unappetising, then it probably is unappetising... and it was.

Luckily for my wife, she had the fall back of family being able to bring in food that she could eat. I feel sorry for those patients that didn't have that as what they would have had to eat wouldn't have filled them with any joy.

Thank you for taking time to comment on Care Opinion. All feedback is valuable to us.

I am please that your wife received good care throughout her stay but I am disappointed to hear about the standard of food served to her. I will discuss this with the Senior Nurse who is responsible for Food, Fluid & Nutrition of patients. They will bring this up at their next meeting with staff and will also ensure that the catering manager is made aware of this.
