I recently attended my Neurology appointment at Leicester General Hospital. I checked in and took a seat and waited, sitting opposite the desk, and overheard the staff discussing quite concerning things. It ranged from complaining about other members of staff, to perhaps the most worrying, patients in the waiting room.
A male staff member asked two female members of staff if they had seen a show called Little Britain because the gentlemen (who was in a wheelchair) to my left looked like one of the characters from the show. This led to the them looking over the raised desk at the patient and agreeing in this humour; and I am sure if I could hear their comments about this gentleman, then surely so could he.
It's incredibly disrespectful, rude and plain vile that patients who are attending these appointments for the betterment of their health are subjected to this behaviour. I am bitterly disappointed because we advocate that staff in the NHS are to be treated with respect, and yet surely this should go both ways - patients also deserve respect.
I know the comments weren't directed to me personally, but I do feel it's important that this behaviour is called out because it's not professional so I did report this and fed this back in my patient survey. If it made me uncomfortable, angry and upset, I can only empathise with what that man must have felt. I really wish they'd have done better.
"Disrespectful attitude"
