"Concerns over continuity between wards"

About: Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / 23 Hour Unit ( Ward 1A) Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Day surgery Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Paediatric surgery ( Wards 3A & 3B)

(as a service user),

We are frequent visitors to the hospital and theatre and have had many very positive experiences however I wanted to highlight our last one as a number of things came up which impacted my daughter significantly, some of which seems unnecessary.

I believe some of our issues were due to it being a Friday and ward closures making things complicated.

My daughter was a day surgery case however due to being taken late and having various pre meds she wasn't fit to leave when the day surgery ward closed at 8pm. Due to being unable to move us to ward 1a we were left on ward 1b after it closed with the 1a staff looking after us until this ward closed at 10pm.

My daughter was still not fit to leave so at this point was moved up to ward 3a.

She was in a significant amount of pain when she came round. I was aware she had been handed over from theatre with them saying she had been prescribed pain relief should she need it.

I requested the pain relief believing she had been written up for it however she had to wait a significant amount of time for a doctor to prescribe her this pain relief again.

My understanding of this is that the day surgery ward use a different prescribing method/ recording system to the ward she was transferred to so the ward she ended up on could not give the previously prescribed medication and had to get it prescribed again.

My concern here is that this seems like a waste of time for everyone but more importantly my daughter had to remain unnecessarily in pain for far too long due to what I understand to be a variation in procedures between wards. As a parent this seems absolutely ridiculous.

My daughter has had extensive psychology and play input due to her anxieties and fears and one of the main issues post op we have is pain management so this was very detrimental to her.

I understand that there are a number of factors at play here but regardless this seems so simple but has such a massively negative impact.

Surely this can be improved so children don't have to suffer due to changing wards.

I will add that all the staff as always were amazing throughout. We also had an issue on arrival at day surgery which although frustrating and caused my daughter distress, the staff did do what they could to resolve which was appreciated.

Hi Busymum1

Thank you for taking your time to leave feedback.

I am sorry to read about your disappointing experience when attending Ward 1a/b and would like to apologise for this. This is not the standard of care we strive to deliver.

I would like to take the opportunity to investigate this further.

If you could please contact me via email to enable me to look fully into your stay.
