"Spent over two hours waiting in a surgical clinic"

About: Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Day Case unit

(as the patient),

Spent over 2 hours waiting in a surgical clinic in Altnagelvin hospital to watch others taken in front of me to then having to wait to see which surgeon was going to see me as mine had left! Then got left to get bloods done which meant another 30-40 min wait as they went on lunch! Absolute joke.

Coordinate the smooth running of orthopaedic surgical lists in a busy Day case Unit delegating staff to ensure the care given to patients is of the highest possible standards.

Dear slidegd64, I am sorry that you have experienced this on your visit to Altnagelvin, please can you be more specific as to what Clinic you had your appointment with. Was it the Day Case unit? As this has been forwarded to ourselves in Day Case and I would like to investigate further so we can avoid this from happening again. I apologise for any inconvenience caused,

yours sincerely

Day case Unit Sr Marie O Reilly

Good afternoon slidegd64,

My name is Wendy and I am the manager in Main Outpatients in Altnagelvin hospital.

Thank you for your feedback.

I am so sorry that you had such a negative experience during your visit to your surgical appointment.

To investigate this thoroughly it would have been of benefit to know the exact clinic that you were attending.

Sometimes the Consultant highlights to the nursing staff which patients that they wish to see themselves and the other doctors see the other patients which may explain why other patients were getting taken before yourself.

The surgeon may have been called away either to the ward or be needed in theatre in the case of an emergency, leaving the other doctors to finish the clinic.

The phlebotomy service are under a different management team, and I will also highlight your concerns to them.

Sincere apologies for all the inconvenience caused and I will discuss this with my team and all surgical teams to highlight this issue so that this can be prevented in the future.
