"Need for pain relief for bone marrow biopsy"

About: Dewsbury & District Hospital / Clinical haematology

(as the patient),

I had my first bone marrow biopsy at Winchester hospital 2 years ago. I was offered entonox if needed, but I declined. It was quite a difficult procedure as my bones are “like concrete” , and the Dr had great difficult trying to insert the needle. Eventually a Registrar was called, and she managed to complete the biopsy. During all this, I still didn’t need any pain relief - yes it was a bit uncomfortable, but certainly bearable.

Fast forward to a month ago when I went to Dewsbury hospital for another biopsy. Yet again, the Dr was having difficult getting into the hip bone, and the pain became excruciating, causing him to abort the procedure. I have to say the Dr was very empathetic and understanding, and suggested he would probably have to sedate me.

I have just had a message saying I have to go this week for another attempt, and to pick up a prescription for a light sedation at the hospital pharmacy.

I am now feeling very anxious that the sedation won’t be strong enough, and if that turns out to be the case I will refuse to have the biopsy. I have marginal zone lymphoma with an enlarged spleen so really I suppose it should be done.

Dear Granny Pip

Thank you for taking the time to share your story and experience with us.

From what you have shared I fully appreciate how anxious you must be feeling. I would recommend you speak with the team before the biopsy is taken to talk through your worries and fears. I am sure they will be able to alleviate some of those fears as it would appear (from your posting) that you really do need to have the biopsy. The team will do everything they can to make sure your experience is a positive as possible.

Thank you for sharing this with us and I hope the biopsy goes well.

Kind regards

Clare Blackburn
