"I cannot thank this amazing team enough for just how much they have changed my child's life"

My child struggled from before the age of 3 (due to illness), which left them unable to communicate with very little sounds and no actual verbal words.  We began the journey of Speech and language therapy. From the start we had fantastic support, with very clear understanding of what my child's needs were and how we were going to support them.

Due to Covid there was a period of time where their progress was slow. However once all was resumed to face to face appointment, my child has come on in leaps an bounds again, especially with the support of Gillian who then handed over to Laura, and excellent support from Katherine who have all been fantastic.

We’ve had incredible understanding in what has been at times a bit of a minefield when finding the right approach to getting the best outcome. With time we found the right techniques which has worked and we’ve applied over an over again, showing fantastic progression.

Both Laura and Katherine also did regular school visits which allowed them to see my child in a different environment which proved very beneficial. My child  is very happy and confident when approaching different techniques now, which were not at all easy and still isn’t at times, but for my child with the right guidance and very fun interactive sessions (that were at times very intense), my child has just grown in confidence which has spread out to other parts of their life such as school and social side, to which they are now asking for longer breaks in between sessions, which are still showing continuous improvement due to the support of Laura and Katherine.

I cannot thank this amazing team enough for just how much they have changed my child's life, and just how important they are. Until you see your child struggling to communicate about the most simplest things such as letting us know about the toilet or even wanting to talk to their friends but can’t and now we have a very chatty outgoing young person, the work and support they've given to not just the child but families it really is just incredible.

All therapy sessions have been tailored to suit my child, the length of appointment for example - sometimes a shorter time was more suited. Depending what exactly we were doing on the day, we could also do some homework before the next app so we knew what’s the next app looked liked .

All sessions have been very interactive with my child using the colours (red, blue, yellow) which he helped to colour on his words so he knew why part to use. The board games that were made with his words so it’s been  marvel, we’ve had teenage mutant ninja turtles, nothing has been too bother an absolutely made to fit my child.

Dear A18

Thank you so much for taking the time to write about you and your child's experience with Speech & Language Therapy.

My name is Hilary and I have the pleasure of leading the Speech & Language Therapy Service in Fife. The SLT staff understand how concerning it can be for parents and families when a young child is finding it hard to learn to talk.

It is so encouraging to hear that you have felt supported at all times, even during the pandemic when meeting with families was so much more difficult. I'm really pleased to hear that your child has made good progress with his talking and that his confidence has grown as well. You have given us a great example about how communication difficulties can affect every aspect of a person's life, whatever their age.

Thank you for giving the examples of how the SLT staff tailored sessions to suit your child, which included using things that motivated him, changing the length of sessions and preparing him for what was coming next. Everyone in the service tries really hard to get it right for the people we work with and it is lovely to hear that with your support, we got it right this time.

I will make sure that Gillian, Laura and Katherine get your feedback and I'm sure they will be really pleased to know how much of a difference they have made in you and your child's life.

Thank you again for your feedback.

Hilary
