"First visit too early"

About: Braid Valley Hospital and Ballymena Health and Care Centre / Community Midwives

(as a service user),

When having both of my babies the midwives have turned up the next day between 9-9:30am. I personally feel this is too early for the first visit. Women have been in labour and hospital, sometimes after having a c section and also have a newborn…this is the first nights sleep they’ve had at home. Having a midwife come so early made me feel embarrassed as although I was up I wasn’t dressed and would have liked more time to get organised in the morning before the midwife came. I felt embarrassed stood there in my pyjamas. I feel it would be helpful if a midwife even rang to say they were on their way over so I could have made sure I was dressed or alternatively came later on in the morning.

Dear KBMc,

.

Thank you for providing your feedback, firstly congratulations on the birth of your second baby.

I apologise that you felt that this was too early for a visit however the midwives prioritise those mothers who have just been discharged from the hospital to ensure all is well with both mother and baby following birth. I appreciate that you felt embarrassed being in your pajamas and would like to reassure you that this would not be an issue for the community midwife.

I am happy to discuss this with you and can be contacted on the number below

Best Wishes,

Rachel

Hi Rachel,

Thanks for the reply. Yes I completely understand the need to check both baby and mum are doing ok. However, I think a phone call when the midwife is on her way would be an easy solution to this problem. It doesn’t take much time for the midwife to do and gives the new mummy a little bit of time to get into something she feels comfortable wearing.

Thanks for the response and I hope the feedback is helpful
