"Hydrotherapy - the physios were very friendly and helpful"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Hydrotherapy Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Physiotherapy

(as the patient),

I was diagnosed with Spinal stenosis in January 2024 after suffering severe sciatica. I had an MRI which showed a bulging disc, and the holes in my vertebrae through which the nerves travelled, had got smaller due to arthritis, and my nerves were irritated, causing the pain.

After some physiotherapy it was decided that I might benefit from some hydrotherapy, and so I went to Glasgow Royal Infirmary, and had 9 sessions, once a week. Each session lasted 30-45 minutes, one-on-one with a physio, and although it wasn't always the same person, notes were made at each session of my progress, so they knew which exercises I had done from week to week, The warmth of the water and buoyancy were a great help, and the physios were very friendly and helpful.

After the 9 sessions, I was referred back to the original physiotherapist to get advice as to how to maintain the exercises, and make sure I knew where to go to for further exercise options.

If there is one thing that made it difficult, it was the distance away from the parking availability to the hydrotherapy pool which was so long. If mobility is an issue then this certainly does not help. There are several parking options, but none close to the physiotherapy department.

Dear scotmeg

Thank you for sharing your story with us. We're glad to hear that you had a positive experience with your hydrotherapy sessions at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, and that the treatment provided relief for your spinal stenosis and sciatica. It's encouraging to know that our physiotherapists were able to support your recovery through personalised care and the use of hydrotherapy, which can be particularly beneficial for conditions like yours.

We understand your concern regarding the distance from parking facilities to the hydrotherapy pool. Accessibility is an important aspect of patient care, and we apologise for the inconvenience this caused during your treatment. We appreciate your feedback and will review the current parking arrangements to explore ways we might improve accessibility for patients with mobility challenges.

Thank you once again for your feedback it really means a lot to the staff.

Wishing you continued progress in your recovery.

Kind regards

Kevin
