Until a few months back, I knew nothing about the existence of the Golden Jubilee National Hospital, far less any stories of patient experiences. Now I do and if your views of NHS establishments need boosting from near zero to one hundred (mine did not) this is the place that will alter your perception.
From arrival to departure, I was looked after magnificently. A professional squadron of staff (there were so many brilliant professionals, I can't name them all) ensured I was questioned (remember to give the right answers!) and kept informed, throughout. Calm, efficient, caring. Everything, just everything, a visit to such an establishment should provide, when handling the understandable fear of the unknown, virtually all patients will have.
Indeed, at one point in the prep area just moments before my operation (inguinal hernia, open wound) myself and the team looking after me, were having such a giggle (probably something daft I said) I almost felt guilty that anyone else might not be feeling quite so comfortable!
Which brings me to my final point.
I would ask patients to go to hospital, with the right attitude. Yep, it's scary. No-one wants to be in hospital, but it's virtually inevitable at some point, you will. Treat staff with the respect they thoroughly deserve. It's a tough enough job, without you going in with attitude. Yes, I'm fortunate. Only a hernia. However, just try to be a good human. We all can. Your experience and that for the staff, will be immeasurably better.
Jubilee staff, let's face it...you rock...
