"Cycle parking"

About: Trafford General Hospital

My comment is not about the healthcare, appointment process or staff, all of which were excellent.

I would simply like to see better cycle parking at the hospital & better publicity about it.

The “Getting Here” page of the website says “We strongly recommend using active travel or public transport to get to Trafford General Hospital”. However the second link on the home page is “Car Parking” with no mention of any cycling facilities on the page.

The “Cycle” section of the “Getting Here” page says “We have cycle racks to lock your bike up outside all the hospital.” However there were none in sight anywhere near the Red Outpatients entrance & no obvious signs saying where they were.

The downloadable map of the hospital site doesn’t even mark any cycle parking (the 5 car parks are clearly marked as you’d expect).

Could I suggest the hospital provides some basic cycle “Sheffield” stands close to every entrance & this is publicised on the website? Or at least gives some indication both on the website & on-site as to their location?

Thanks & best wishes.

Dear Patient,

Mr Mark Foden, Group Associate Director of Sustainability would like to thank for bringing your experience and these shortfalls in cycling infrastructure and information to our attention.

Mr Foden has advised that we are keen to make active travel easy for all, and we can see that your experience does not reflect this ambition. As a Trust we have a Healthy Travel Strategy where we aim to support all members of our communities to travel in the most sustainable way.

In light of the suggestions in your email, we will endeavour to support improvements at Trafford General Hospital by:

• Updating the online information and wayfinding signage to be more specific about where current cycle parking is available on the site; and

• Undertake a review with our internal stakeholders to see if there is an opportunity to install more convenient Sheffield stands closer to the Red Outpatients entrance.

There are a number of issues to take into account when we install new cycle parking including; maintaining the integrity of fire escape routes, the security of a location, and the availability of CCTV coverage. All of this will be taken into account as we seek to improve the cycling information and infrastructure.

Mr Foden would like to reassure you that we have taken your concerns seriously. If you are not satisfied with our response, you can contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 0161 276 8686 or by e-mailing pals@mft.nhs.uk.
