"Waiting times - lack of clarity"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / General Surgery

(as a service user),

I have had uncontrollable constipation since 2018, I was referred for a surgical opinion in spring 2020, as I was repeating being admitted to hospital being unable to empty my bowel. I saw consultant in summer 2020 and waited until March 2023 for the necessary two tests to be completed.

I was re-seen by consultant in summer 2023 and agreed to have bowel surgery. I am aware of the long waiting list times but find it completely frustrating that I am unable to get any timescale from the hospital. I am currently off work every 3-4 works for a bowel clearout with strong medications, that aren't in fact licenced for constipation and worry about the long term impact this is having on my body.

I am now at over 25 hospitalisations due to impacted bowel/faecal loading and I am upset, frustrated and lacking all confidence in NHS Grampian. Every time I contact the hospital, roughly every 3 months (as no update at all from hospital, last communication was August 2023 to say that my surgery hadn't been completed within the 12 weeks), I feel completely frustrated as all I am ever told is it will be a long wait.

I would have much more confidence, if I could be advised a specific timetable e.g. you will likely be another 9-12 months, another 18 months etc.

Good afternoon,

Thank you for sharing this feedback, and I am very sorry that you continue to experience a delay in your wait for surgery, and that we have been unable to give you clear indication of when this will happen.

Unfortunately due to significant backlogs, and ongoing pressures on our services, the waiting time for surgical intervention is far longer than we would hope. I appreciate that this is extremely frustrating, and we are working very hard to improve this. Work includes both maximising local capacity, as well as utilising any available external capacity where possible and appropriate.

It can be very difficult for us to give an exact waiting time, as this can fluctuate depending on demand, but please do be assured that all patients are booked in order of clinical priority, and of course by wait time, and this is reviewed on an ongoing basis.

I would of course be happy to discuss further with you, and to provide as accurate a picture as is possible. Can I ask you to kindly contact me on karin.macleod@nhs.scot

Many thanks

Karin MacLeod - Unit Operational Manager
