After suffering from severe mental health issues for some time, I tried to take my life. If it hadn’t it been for the excellent medical treatment I received from emergency services and ICU staff I would likely be dead.
I was assessed by the PLNS service at Monklands university hospital whilst still a patient in intensive care. The nurses that assessed me possessed absolutely no empathy, were incredibly dismissive and overall made me feel exactly how I felt when I tried to take my life only the day prior.
I have been assessed by nurses from this team on many occasions and I feel they showed a genuine disregard for life. They have told me that I have the capacity to choose if I want to end my life, which in my opinion is entirely fundamentally incompatible with the values supposed to be upheld by nursing and medical staff.
I think it is time for change, as in my view nurses who do not value human life should have no place in our NHS.
"Lack of empathy"
