I am writing this after the event has happened.
My son was brought to the outpatient department in the children’s hospital in Glasgow for a blood test. My son is incredibly frightened of needles. This time I was in attendance with him and 2 lovely nurses who I cannot remember their names were so loving and patient with him. He did unfortunately not get to the stage where his bloods could be taken safely so we had to ring dad who was abroad at the time. My son wanted to visit with his dad instead of me and insisted he would get his bloods done. I let the nurses know this and they were very accommodating to bring him back another time.
My husband eventually took my son back the following week once he was back and we had the same issue again. My son was reluctant to get the bloods done and was scared. Two lovely nurses again (I think the names was Sophie and Arij? My husband has a better memory) were very patient and well spoken towards my son. My husband and my son spent around 45 minutes in the room with the nurses and a play leader however he still did not get it done. The nurses gave the option of having a break outside and perhaps coming back in if my son was willing to get the blood done.
After 10-15 minutes my son agreed to try again and the two nurses took him straight in. They were again very communicative and safely managed to get his bloods done. It was a relief when I found out he got it done when he got home!
Sorry for the long story but I just wanted to spread word regarding these special nurses and the amazing job they do. They make the children as well as parents feel safe and comforted. The service is incredible and runs effectively. My son now feels comforted in the fact that he now understands the nurses are there to help him be better and not to hurt him. I could not fault the whole experience one bit!
Thank you for the amazing work you all do, it does not go unnoticed. Superheroes don’t wear capes they wear blue tunics and work in the outpatient department!
