"They make children as well as parents feel safe and comforted"

About: Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Outpatient Department

(as a parent/guardian),

I am writing this after the event has happened.

My son was brought to the outpatient department in the children’s hospital in Glasgow for a blood test. My son is incredibly frightened of needles. This time I was in attendance with him and 2 lovely nurses who I cannot remember their names were so loving and patient with him. He did unfortunately not get to the stage where his bloods could be taken safely so we had to ring dad who was abroad at the time. My son wanted to visit with his dad instead of me and insisted he would get his bloods done. I let the nurses know this and they were very accommodating to bring him back another time.

My husband eventually took my son back the following week once he was back and we had the same issue again. My son was reluctant to get the bloods done and was scared. Two lovely nurses again (I think the names was Sophie and Arij? My husband has a better memory) were very patient and well spoken towards my son. My husband and my son spent around 45 minutes in the room with the nurses and a play leader however he still did not get it done. The nurses gave the option of having a break outside and perhaps coming back in if my son was willing to get the blood done.

After 10-15 minutes my son agreed to try again and the two nurses took him straight in. They were again very communicative and safely managed to get his bloods done. It was a relief when I found out he got it done when he got home!

Sorry for the long story but I just wanted to spread word regarding these special nurses and the amazing job they do. They make the children as well as parents feel safe and comforted. The service is incredible and runs effectively. My son now feels comforted in the fact that he now understands the nurses are there to help him be better and not to hurt him. I could not fault the whole experience one bit!

Thank you for the amazing work you all do, it does not go unnoticed. Superheroes don’t wear capes they wear blue tunics and work in the outpatient department!

Good Morning @Katys

As the Senior Charge Nurse of Outpatients RHC, I want to firstly thank you for taking the time to write some wonderful feedback when attending the treatment room with your son.

I am especially thrilled to hear that the nurses on both occasions showed care and compassion towards your son taking the time to understand his feelings.

We aim to provide excellent care to each patient and recognise their individual requirements and achieve a positive end result no matter how long it takes. I am so proud that my team made your son yourself and his father feel comforted.

Kindness goes such a long way and is an experience you will always remember.

I will personally feed this wonderful review back to the nurses in the treatment rooms especially Arij and Sophie as I am sure this will make their day.

Thank you once again and have a wonderful day.

Kind Regards

Mhairi Stirrat
