"I didn't feel like a patient but a person"

About: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Lothian Birth Centre Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Maternity care

(as the patient),

Just had my second baby at Royal Infirmary. Triage gave amazing advice based on what I told them. We were asked to come down and had a bit of a wait in the waiting room while I had contractions, the receptionist noticed and offered me a private spot to have them. It was busy and they seemed rushed off their feet but they still offered care and comfort to everyone there, the nurses apologised for wait times even though it is out of their control and understandable.

The nurses in the delivery room were amazing, it was a quick 1 hour labour, they kept me calm and reassured, followed my notes from my birth plan, made casual conversation with myself and husband and gave me clear instructions and lots of praises during the birthing process. Only after I had given birth did I realise Georgia was a student nurse as she was very professional, caring, informative and supportive. I thought she could be a head midwife. With both nurses I didn’t feel like a patient but a person, I can’t find the words to praise them enough expect from that they are amazing people.

After we had amazing care from night nurses who responded quickly when I buzzed for pain killers. They checked on us and informed us of the checks they were doing to baby and why, while making casual conversation with us. My first labour and aftercare was a bit traumatic and affected my mental health and bonding with baby, but this time was so positive all around which greatly helped my mental health and bond with my baby and that’s down to all the staff on the labour ward and birthing centre.
