"Let down in a very vulnerable time"

About: Queen Margaret Hospital / Maternity care Victoria Hospital / Early Pregnancy Assessment Service

(as a service user),

I was experiencing a lot of heavy bleeding and was 6 weeks pregnant. I phoned the early pregnancy clinic in which I left a voicemail (it was a Sunday), after no call back I phoned again 8 hours later where I spoke to a nurse and was advised to attend the Victoria hospital.

I attended with my husband and we were told to sit in a waiting room and that someone would be with us shortly, it was 2 hours later when someone came in. I understand that people are busy but a sorry we are busy it will be a while would have been helpful as our toddler was at home with a grandparent.

When I did get seen the nurse was going to take bloods in which it wasn’t being performed properly (I am a nurse) and I had to advise them that they should clean the area first and that they should removed the tourniquet before removing the needle. They had also put the tourniquet on my arm then left the room in which I had to remove it myself as they were gone for almost 5 minutes.

The Doctor that seen me was every nice and informative, I was told that I would be followed up in the early pregnancy clinic and that I would get a call from them in the next few days, I was able to ask a few questions and thought there was a good plan in place.

I was asked to wait for my blood results, and at this point my husband needed to go home for our toddler so I was by myself. A different nurse came and got me to discuss my blood results, I felt extremely rushed out of the room and wasn’t given any written information. At the time I was trying to process that I was having a miscarriage and I was very emotional. I felt very unsupported for an emotional time and this is unfortunately my second miscarriage, I felt that I wasn’t able to ask any questions or guided to any support, especially since I was by myself at this point. I haven’t received any follow up call from anyone like the Doctor had explained I would.

I just want this to be highlighted as I wouldn’t want someone to have to go through a very upsetting experience and this to be their experience also. I have had good experience from the maternity service with my previous pregnancy and was very disappointed after my experience this time. I am unsure if it was because it was the weekend rather than during the week, but I feel that I have been let down in a very vulnerable time.
