"Usage of disabled toilet"

About: Perth Royal Infirmary / Clinical Investigations Unit Perth Royal Infirmary / Endoscopy

(as the patient),

I get an infusion at PRI and the toilet in the department is too small for my needs, so I go next door in the Endoscopy department, who have said that patients can use their disabled toilet as it’s bigger. I have been chaperoned and shown by a health care assistant many times to the toilet, but today she was very busy so I went through there in the morning and everything was ok, even had a chat with the nurse in Endoscopy and I said that I would be through again later in the afternoon and she said that’s ok.

I went through there in the afternoon and was on my way to the toilet I use. I told the staff member I was going to use the disabled toilet and they walked towards me and said that’s not the toilet I can use, and told me to follow them to the one I could use. We went through a room of the corridor like a mess room/nurse lounge (that had a few seats in it, maybe a table in it as well). I was trying to keep up with the nurse whilst wheeling a stand with my infusion on it and holding my bag of supplies I need to take with me to the toilet to use all the time. They showed me the toilet in the corridor and the door I was to go out of.

I felt I was back at school getting told off from the head teacher.

For me this was a very bad experience and will feel bad now using any disabled toilet in PRI.

Dear cafeer59

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your personal experience at you last appointment in CIU. I was sorry to hear of your negative experience when using the facilities in Endoscopy.

We do aim to deliver a trauma free person-centred care for all patients in our care, clearly on this occasion this did not happen. Please accept our sincere apologies for the distress that resulted from your experience.

Hello

Many thanks for posting your comment.

Please accept my apologies regarding how you were spoken to by a member of the Endoscopy staff.

We have two disabled toilets within the department that patients from CIU can access.

I will communicate to all staff to remind them of the agreed process.

I am available on 01738 473316 if you wish to speak to me.

Josy Carnegie

Senior Charge Nurse
