"Access to the Orthopaedic Centre"

About: Trauma & orthopaedics / Orthopaedic National Treatment Centre

(as the patient),

I had an appointment to see a surgeon (in the National Treatment Centre) wrt a severe leg injury.  My injury meant that I needed a wheelchair to get around.  It also meant that I could not drive. My wife and I used the bus and got off at the main hospital entrance, through the building to A&E entrance/exit and were then confronted by a significant slope up to the NTC entrance which was not ideal for a wheelchair.  It did not help that it was raining heavily and that there is no covered walkway on this part of the access route.

As all buses pass by within 10 metres of the NTC entrance, are there any suggestions / plans for a bus stop being built there? Access to the NTC from the bus stops in Hayfield Road also involve slopes and no weather protection.

We are encouraged to use public transport to access the hospital facilities.  If public transport is the only option, this set up makes it extremely difficult for patients with mobility issues (wheelchair, crutches) to access the NTC.  Can I suggest an additional bus stop be trialled close to the NTC entrance?

Dear Wheels of steel,

Thank you for sharing your feedback regarding your recent visit to the National Treatment Centre. We acknowledge your concern about the accessibility challenges you faced, particularly with the steep slope and lack of covered walkway leading to the NTC entrance.

We have taken on board your comments and suggestions regarding the need for a bus stop closer to the NTC entrance, as well as the overall accessibility for patients with mobility issues. Your feedback is valuable, and we have forwarded your concerns to our capital planning project team for their review and consideration.

We are currently awaiting their feedback and will respond to you in due course.

Thank you once again for bringing this important issue to our attention.

Dear Wheels of steel,

This care opinion was passed to the Capital Planning Project Team. The response is below:

"We are sorry to hear of your difficulties in accessing our National Treatment Centre via bus and wheelchair on your recent visit.

During the planning stage of the build, the team did investigate adjacent bus stops. Unfortunately, the road in this area is a blue light route and there is insufficient space to create bus laybys to overcome this.

If you are travelling by bus in the future and require assistance to reach our facilities, please visit the main hospital reception where we will be happy to assist you."

Thank you.

regards,

Ben Johnston
