I was seen by a physiotherapist who told me he believes that I have damaged the cartilage in my knee and the only thing available to me is to do some exercises.
Some years ago I had a similarly undiagnosed problem with my other knee however I had an MRI scan that eventually resulted in an arthroscopy. Since then I have had no pain in the knee that was operated on.
I was told that the NHS guidance is not to sends people for MRI scans. I can only assume this policy is to save the NHS money.
