"Over 50 hours in A&E"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

Absolutely disgusted at the treatment of my father, who is in his 80s.

He started to hallucinate at home and we called 111 early morning.

He was eventually admitted into A&E and he sat in the fit to sit area for 12 hours .

During this time he received an X Ray and a CT scan and blood was taken

He was eventually put in a bed , still in A&E, where he started to deteriorate overnight - eventually diagnosed delirium through infection - although not sure where the infection was.

The nursing staff attending have been fantastic and very apologetic but over 50 hours later and he’s still in A&E and it’s so distressing watching your father in this state.

I feel that the NHS is broken and this should not happen to anyone, let alone my elderly father who has given so much to society over the years.

Oh and he lost his wife and our mum only 3 months ago so this has just made things so much worse for him.

Dear Alexander annoyed

First of all, I am sorry to hear that your father took unwell and required to attend the Emergency Department here at University Hospital Wishaw. I have no doubt that this was a very worrying time for you as well as your father, and I was saddened to read that he suffered the loss of his wife and your mum just a short time ago. Please accept my sincere condolences.

I wish to apologise for the lengthy wait that your father encountered waiting on a bed for admission. Unfortunately, the site remains with significant bed capacity pressures and this can result in longer waits within the ED. We are working on a range of improvements to reduce waits within the Emergency Department and will continue to progress with these initiatives.

Further information would be helpful to be able to review your father’s attendance and be able to feedback to you. If you would like us to do this, please contact Yvonne Ross our Patient Affairs Manager on 01698 366558. This will allow us to review, feedback, take any required action as well as take any appropriate learning.

Kind regards and I hope that your father’s health is improving

Faith
