My mum is in her 80s and was admitted to Borders General Hospital with life threatening Pneumonia in June, her immediate care was good in the very busy A&E department, she then spent time in wards 5 and 4 and there was both positive and some not so positive care delivered, I was able to highlight the not so positives as they occurred.
My mum was transferred to Hawick Community Hospital for rehab and we were happy with this as we felt rehab was what she needed to hopefully help her regain some independence with a view to hopefully returning to her home albeit with a package of care.
My mum has been in HCH now for over 2 weeks and sadly isn’t making progress, she has been seen by an OT who was very helpful and understanding of my mum's needs but my mum has received no Physiotherapy, therapy I believe my mum desperately needs.
I’ve been told there has been issues relating to Physiotherapy provision in the time my mum has been in HCH. My mum has now developed another chest infection which I believe could have been prevented if she had been receiving the therapies she needed to encourage her mobility and help improve her lung capacity.
Furthermore my mum was kept in a ward with a Covid positive patient as there was apparently no other room available for the positive patient to be transferred to, I expressed my serious concerns to the nurses, GP and Infection Control Department re the risk I felt my mum was being exposed to, thankfully my mum has remained Covid free to date.
My main reason for sharing our experience on this platform is to highlight the serious lack of rehab provision there seems to currently be in Hawick Community Hospital.
"Serious lack of rehab provision"
