I recently underwent day surgery at Wishaw University Hospital for an open mesh repair of a large right-sided inguinal-scrotal hernia. Mr. Mahmud and his team performed the procedure. The day began with the daycare team's exceptional care, which included thorough explanations and ensuring my comfort. The meticulous attention to detail in completing the necessary forms, checking my blood pressure and temperature, and changing into appropriate attire, all contributed to a sense of readiness and understanding of the upcoming events, reassuring me of the high standard of care.
Mr. Mahmud visited me to conduct an examination, give a detailed explanation of the procedure, and ask if I had any questions. Subsequently, anaesthesia specialists reviewed my medical history for allergies and explained the administration of general and local anaesthesia. They also discussed post-surgical pain management and aftercare. The nursing staff continuously ensured my comfort while waiting before entering the operating room.
Just before being taken to the theater, a theater nurse checked on me to confirm my well-being. I was then prepared and made comfortable for the surgery by theater staff and doctors. Upon waking up post-procedure, I found myself returning to the ward. The nurses' close monitoring of my condition and their inquiries about my comfort and needs demonstrated the hospital's commitment to thorough post-surgery care.
After surgery, the nurses asked if I could get up to visit the toilet and pass urine. They assisted me in getting out of bed, and I successfully managed to pass urine. They then inquired if I wanted tea, coffee, or a soft drink and offered sandwiches and biscuits. I chose to have black tea and biscuits. I texted my family to let them know I was out of surgery.
The nursing staff regularly checked my blood pressure and temperature, ensuring my well-being. Mr Mahmud visited me to inform me that the surgery had gone well and that I could arrange to go home and enquired if I had any questions or concerns. The nurses offered to call my wife, but I did that myself. The anaesthetists visited to check on my recovery and see if I had any questions. They explained the arrangements for my post-care medication and dressings.
The staff nurse and I reviewed a comprehensive discharge form, which included my GP's name, my allergies, details of the surgical procedure, information on sutures, clips, and dressings, the medication they were providing, an information leaflet, and other relevant details. This included signs of infection, pain relief, contact details for Mr. Mahmud's secretary, advice on restricted movement, and instructions on when to remove the dressing. We both signed the form, and I was given two copies—one for me and one for my GP. The nurses helped me get dressed, and my wife picked me up, leaving me feeling fully informed about my post-operative care.
The entire process was well-planned and executed, and the staff demonstrated a high degree of professionalism and unwavering commitment to patient care, making me feel truly valued as a patient.
