Over a year ago I had a two sub-massive PE’s. It resulted in me spending a month in hospital, the care I received was excellent throughout. However, I have remained unwell since, with various investigations delayed for various reasons.
Recently I went to bed at 12am as usual, but, as I lay down I felt extremely out of breath. After sitting up for 2 minutes I was then sick in the bathroom. My wife woke up and immediately noted that I was clammy and very pale/grey in colour. So she called an ambulance.
Dispatched as an emergency, it took 1 hour to arrive as they were obviously busy. Paramedic noted the same as my wife, also, stating that my pulse was irregular upon actually feeling for the pulse. Ambulance crew as always were amazing. Noted my ECG looked abnormal and consistent with someone who has respiratory issues.
Handover to A&E nurse occurred at 2am roughly. Triage nurse was very friendly, although clearly very busy. Moved to a bay I was fitted with the heart trace and SATS probe and bloods taken.
From then until 7am I saw a nurse twice. Neither time were any obs taken. For those 5 hours the doctor in charge (I presume as they were in red) barely left their desk. At no point in those five hours did anyone actually physically look at me. I even heard this doctor say to a colleague - oh, he’s just unfit. I assume a reference to me as since the PE’s I have barely been able to walk without getting breathless. I feel this doctor should not be running and A&E department with an attitude like that. By the time I was assessed by an FY1 in the morning, I had been sat upright with my feet up all night, and unsurprisingly my symptoms had improved slightly.
I was then sent for an x-ray, which is completely useless in detecting clots, and told as bloods had come back normal I was to be discharged.
Firstly as I have a degree in biomedical sciences, I know that there is always a chance of false negatives. Given that every CT scan I have had in the last year has shown clots, I would have thought it would have been safer to run a CT just to be sure given my history.
FY1 didn’t confirm this with the nurse and I sat waiting for another 30 minutes until the nurse asked said doctor if I was to be discharged.
Upon being discharged, I received my discharge summary, where no actual information about what had or had not been done could be found, nor a likely diagnosis.
I was just dismissed by A&E as a Doctor decided it was just about my weight and fitness, I can only assume, without actually reviewing my medical records.
