About: University Hospital Wishaw / Inpatient Occupational Therapy University Hospital Wishaw / Inpatient Physiotherapy University Hospital Wishaw / Stroke Unit (Ward 11)

(as a carer),

I arranged with a physio to see how my husband was progressing in his rehabilitation after having a massive stroke. only to be told they were discharging him. I have not had any assessment of the home to see if it is suitable for him as he has weakness all down his left side and uses a Zimmer. I live in an up and down stair home. I am putting in a wetroom for him they have told me I have to put him in a chair lift all they have offered me is a commode and get on with it. I have refused to take him home until the bathroom is done. Surely there needs to be an assessment.I have health issues and nothing is being taken in to account. I feel they are sending him home to vegetate

Had a conversation with an occupational therapist in Wishaw General, well that was a waste of time. It seems they would rather my husband go into a home than put in a chair lift.

They say if I take him home he must be one level living which will not work. I know him better than anyone and know he won't stay upstairs. My husband has stated to me he won't stay up the stairs or live down the stairs but according to them, he has agreed to it. I have contacted an Advocacy worker to speak to him so I can't be accused of making him say what I want him to say. The way my husband and I have been treated is shocking.

Dear billynew,

Thank you for getting in touch via patient opinion and I'm sorry to hear your views on your contacts with the Stroke Occupational therapy team, within the hospital.

Our job is to work with people to try and get them to a stage where they can be safely discharged and continue their recovery/rehabilitation at home.

Unfortunately the type of equipment you are looking for requires assessment of the person and needs to be within your home and this will be looked at following discharge. Additional assessment and decisions regarding adaptations are made by the community teams.

I do understand that, what I can't get my head around is the discharge date has been changed and I am still to be notified of it.

Is it normal practice not to notify family, especially the wife of changes made?
