"1 year old ventilated"

About: Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary / Intensive Care Unit Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary / Respiratory medicine Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Respiratory Medicine (Ward 3C) Scottish Ambulance Service

(as a parent/guardian),

My 1-year-old son was taken to DGRI in February by blue light ambulance, as arranged by GP due to breathing difficulties. He was taken into resus and after not responding to treatment to fight what they suspected was an infection, he was put on a ventilator (later diagnosed as pneumonia/ bronchitis). Due to his condition, he was then transferred to critical care within DGRI and then transferred by Scot Star to Glasgow.

Our son was very unwell, and it was an absolutely awful experience to watch your child lie on a trolley so unwell, but we cannot thank the staff enough for their help, as I dread to think what the outcome would have been if Critical Care consultant Dr McDonald wasn’t present on his arrival to DGRI.

He has since had a recent admission to DGRI and again cannot fault the staff at all...we actually had the same lovely staff nurse, Stacey, on both occasions!

As somebody who works within the NHS and understands the pressures within the system at present, you would not have known there was any other patients in the department, as the staff were so attentive (granted he was very unwell so likely a priority within the department at that time).

We just wanted to say a massive thank you to staff nurse Stacey, ANP Stacey, Dr Munshi from DGRI, Jacqueline and Sandra from Scotstar (what an efficient pair who make everything look so effortless!) and consultant Dr Worall and staff nurse Carol from Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow...you are all amazing and we are so grateful for your care of our son.

Biggest thank you to Dr McDonald, who we will be eternally grateful that he was on shift when we arrived in resus... an incredible, amazing person.

Thank you all so much 😊

Dear GRD2022

Sincere thanks for taking the time to share your experience of your son's recent hospital visit. I am sorry to hear that your son was so unwell and had to be ventilated and transferred to RHC so far from your home.

PICU can be such a scary experience for any parent and family and I am delighted to read that your son is much better after being so well cared for at every step of his journey.

I will ensure to pass your kind words on to the staff from the RHC and Scotstar personally.

Many thanks

Alana Spence

Dear GRD2022,

Many thanks for taking the time to share your feedback here on CareOpinion. I am so sorry to read about what happened to your son, as a father to a toddler myself I cannot even begin to imagine how terrifying a situation that must have been for you all. I do hope that he is feeling better and I am sure he has been collecting all of his very well deserved cuddles.

It is great to hear positive stories about the work our wonderful staff provide and I will definitely be forwarding on your feedback to Sandra and Jacqueline. I am sure they will be very pleased to read your update and kind words.

I wish you all the very best and thanks again.

Kind Regards

Alan
