"Sustained and detailed care after a knee injury"

About: Homerton University Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as a service user),

I fell and broke my kneecap yards from Homerton Hospital in early 2022.  Being a very active septuagenarian, I undertook a variety of physiotherapy, exercise programmes, topical creams and lotions. I dance, walk and look after myself.  I always felt I could walk in unannounced at the Homerton if  I needed help

I do feel however that specific fractures like a broken patella could benefit from a more sustained and varied programme. For instance what should I be rubbing on my knee and how often? What are the most successful knee exercise programmes?  There could also be groups who share experience and therapies. In a city like London, it should be possible to tap into that support and benefit from innovation in the field as well as from shared experience.

One is pretty much left to take steps (sic) alone, which is slower and more hesitant than it need be. Grouping people into injury specific activities and therapies also has a chance of highlighting successful route maps to recovery. The NHS does things so well but promoting supported self help seems a win-win
