"Our mum was given the best chance possible by the care"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Elderly Medicine (wards 3-7 & 36) Royal Alexandra Hospital / General Medicine (Wards 8, 10, 11, 14, 15, 18 & 27) Royal Alexandra Hospital / General Surgery (wards 19, 20, 24, 26 &29) Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as a relative),

We would like to send our sincere thanks to all healthcare staff involved in our mum's care at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley over the past 3 months.

Our mum was taken to hospital with abdominal pain by two wonderful paramedics on the evening of a Friday in late March 2024. She was admitted to Ward 20 RAH in the early hours of Saturday.

Staff Nurse Avril cared for our mum during her first few days in hospital and very kindly kept us informed of our mum's condition which was reported as a perforated duodenum. She was progressing well until she unfortunately suffered a stroke in early April.

The kindness and support shown to our mum and to our family by Staff Nurse Lesley on that difficult day has not been forgotten.

Our mum was transferred to Ward 6 and then on to Ward 5 where she spent almost 9 weeks receiving intensive stroke rehabilitation and wonderful nursing care under the direction of  Dr McManus and SCN Morton.

Sadly though, the decline in her health was becoming more evident and following an attempted discharge of only two days our mum was readmitted to Ward 14. There her health continued to deteriorate despite the efforts of Dr Henderson and her medical team alongside the very friendly and caring nursing team.

Our dear mum sadly passed away in a morning of early July 2024 in Ward 14 RAH.

Staff Nurse Annette and the other nursing staff on duty showed our family such kindness and compassion on the hardest day of our lives. We can't thank them enough.

Our lovely mum was almost 85. She had fortunately spent most of her life in very good health and was rarely in hospital until these last 3 months.

These months have been so difficult for us all and sadly we did not get the outcome we hoped for but we were always assured that our mum was given the best chance possible by the care she received within Wards 20,6/5 and 14 at RAH.

Thank you to you all.

Dear Fam69

Firstly, please accept my sincerest condolences for the sad loss of your mother, I cannot begin to imagine how difficult a time this must have been, and continues to be for you and your wider family. Thank you however, for taking the time to share your feedback here on CareOpinion and my apologies that it has taken me a while to respond, I have only just returned from leave.

Even in this tragic story where as you say, the outcome was not one that you had hoped for, it is incredible that you describe a situation where the people who cared for your mother over those months are painted in a very positive light and it is wonderful to read about how caring everyone was, thank you for writing this.

If you wish I can pass on the feedback to the crew directly. To do so we would need to know the date, time and address that the Ambulance attended and your mothers name. This information can be sent to sas.feedback@nhs.scot for the team to pick up. If you do decide to do this, would you be so kind as to make reference to your CareOpinion username so that the team can easily locate your story and share it with the crew.

I wish you all the very best and thanks again.

Kind Regards

Alan

Dear Fam69

We would like to express our deepest condolences on the passing of your mum. Thank you for taking the time to share your heartfelt story and for your kind words about the care she received at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. Your gratitude means a great deal to us, and we are honoured to have been part of her journey during her final months.

We are incredibly proud of our dedicated healthcare professionals, and it is touching to hear how specific individuals and teams, such as Staff Nurse Avril, Staff Nurse Lesley, Dr McManus, Senior Charge Nurse Morton, Dr Henderson, and Staff Nurse Annette, played pivotal roles in your mum's care.

It is heartening to know that your mum received attentive and loving care from Ward's 6, 5, 20 and finally Ward 14. We are deeply sorry that despite all efforts, her health continued to decline, but we are grateful that you felt supported and reassured by the medical and nursing teams throughout this challenging time.

I will be happy to pass on your thanks to all the staff involved in your mum's care who I'm sure will be touched to hear your kind words.

Once again, we extend our sincere thanks for your thoughtful message during such a difficult time. Our thoughts are with you and your family.

Kind regards

Kevin
