"We update each other regularly"

About: Community Mental Health Services (over 65s) / North East Team

(as a relative),

My mum has a mental health issue and prior to her admission to hospital and involvement of Jane, I had highlighted this numerous times. Jane, Case Manager at North East Community Mental Health Team Older People took me seriously, meeting with me and my mum – that was a first. Jane listened to me and observed my mum in her home.

My mum now lives in a care home and I was lost with this whole process. I do not have siblings that can help. Jane has guided me – my mum was in receipt of attendance allowance, and she advised that I needed to contact the Department of Work & Pensions to have this benefit suspended whilst my mum was in hospital. Without this guidance my mum would have ended up in an overpayment situation.

If I have a problem with anything I ask Jane her opinion, she is very supportive towards me and my wife. I have appreciated this at this personally difficult time - when your mum loses capacity to make rational decisions. When you are mourning for the personality, she was but is still here.

Jane helped me when I encountered difficulties in submitting a termination of tenancy for my mum’s Angus Council sheltered house. I tried to contact housing and couldn’t get anywhere then I spoke to Jane and it all went smoothly.

I live at a distance to my mum and appreciate that I can contact Jane, usually by email and that we update each other regularly. Communication between us is very good.
