"Waiting for surgery"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / General Surgery General Practices in Grampian

(as the patient),

My story begins in January 2023. I noticed something in my groin, it turned out to be a hernia, so I went to my family doctor for a referral. After a few months, it turns out that the doctor ignored the entire conversation. Another general practitioner sends a referral to the hospital. In the meantime, my hernia became larger and more troublesome.

The next step is to wait for the letter from the surgery. After 7 months, I received information that I had been put on the waiting list. In the meantime, I also had a visit to A&E due to pain, I had to wait 10 hours for the examination.

In March I wrote my first complaint to NHS Grampian and the response I received was disappointing. No specific answers to the questions asked, no compliance with the TTG principle or any standards.

It is July 2024 and I am still waiting for a surgery date 1.5 years after my GP diagnosed the case. I wrote 3 complaints and none of them contradicted anything that could be found on the official NHS websites. The waiting time is completely different than the one given to me by the employee.

Of course everything is still Covid's fault, I feel these people don't take any responsibility for anything. So dear NHS workers (I don't mean doctors or nurses), get to work! Because the standards have been shocking!

Good morning,

Thank you for sharing this feedback, and I am very sorry that you continue to experience a delay in your wait for surgery. I also apologise that previous responses to your feedback have not provided you with sufficient information around your concerns.

Unfortunately due to significant backlogs, and ongoing pressures on our services, the waiting time for surgical intervention is far longer than we would hope. Please be assured that we recognise how frustrating and disappointing this is for our patients, and that we are working extremely hard to try to improve this. Work includes both maximising local capacity, as well as utilising any available external capacity where possible and appropriate.

In terms of our waiting times, whilst we try to provide an accurate a picture as possible via our public information forums, these waiting times fluctuate, and are influenced greatly by individual circumstances. I would like to assure you though that all patients are booked in order of clinical priority, and of course by wait time, and this is reviewed on an ongoing basis.

The team within the service you are waiting on would be able to provide you with the most accurate picture for your particular position on the list, however this again would come with the caveat that this can change slightly depending on demand.

Should you be unsure about how to make contact with the relevant team, please do make contact with the feedback team and they may point you in the right direction.

Please accept my apologies again that we have not yet been able to offer you a date for surgery.

Many thanks

Karin MacLeod - Unit Operational Manager
