I'd had this little pimple like spot on my left cheek for some time. Having been fortunate enough (and a male), to have lived a very healthy life of seventy years on this planet I never really bothered about it. I had to be careful when shaving, but other than that it seemed to co exist on face without any problems. It did weep a small amount of blood occasionally overnight, but after a few months that disappeared and everything seemed to be back to normal.
Eventually, at the insistence of my daughter, and in order to keep the peace, I contacted my doctor who referred me to ARI Aberdeen. I was given a brief examination and told that they would be in touch in order to remove this uninvited attachment to my cheek. To be honest many months passed, and I thought I'd been forgotten. It wasn't causing me any discomfort so I just waited. ARI contacted me a few times in the early part of 2024 to check on my situation, and very soon afterwards I was asked if I would be willing to attend Stracathro hospital for the minor surgery to take place. I was given a date to attend and within the two weeks prior to attending my general health and availability were confirmed by further telephone calls.
I can only say that from arriving at the hospital I was cared for by everyone I met from the receptionist to the surgeon. Mr Usmati took me through the process and explained what was going to happen. My last experience with hospital was at the age of twelve when I had my tonsils removed, and that was a very different situation altogether.
In retrospect I cannot praise the NHS enough. The care and pre-care at ARI and Stracathro was extremely professional and the post-care of my local nurse at Fraserburgh was exceptional. I cannot believe that the NHS gets such bad press as it's so unfair. I've been fortunate enough never to have used the service very much, but in my opinion we really have the best health care in the world. You guys deserve the highest praise for what you do for every human being, regardless of wealth, nationality or any other form of discrimination, every day of the year.
If I had one negative opinion where I believe you guys fell down, it would be the fact that when I was twelve I got ice cream after I had my tonsils out. But this time, nothing, I was very disappointed.
"NHS staff deserve the highest praise"
