My GP referred me for an ultrasound scan which indicated an issue with my bladder. 2 days later I had a Cystoscopy at the Urology Department of the Western General Hospital where they discovered a malignant tumour. I was of course anxious but greatly appreciated the honesty and candour of the staff in discussing my condition, its implications and potential outcomes.
3 weeks later I had a CT scan and the following day I had an operation to remove the tumour. I stayed overnight at the hospital.
Throughout the whole experience I was so impressed and appreciative of the care I received from the staff. It seemed that there were many different roles of the various staff but that they all worked as a team. They were caring and attentive. Prior to the operation the surgeon and the anaesthetist explained the procedures and answered any questions that I had. I really appreciated the personal dialogue with them.
The nursing staff were professional and personable. A nurse that I spoke to was on a 10 hour shift to be followed by an overnight on-call. She had a young family at home.
As for my post operation condition, I'm sore but feeling good. In 3 or 4 weeks I will speak again to the surgeon who will have the result of my biopsy and will discuss what happens next. It could be simple repeated monitoring or more extensive surgery. I am anxious about it but I am in good hands here.
