My son was just 2 when he suffered a stroke. He was paralysed down his left hand side and we were left terrified that he wouldn't gain his movements back. 5 days later it was confirmed as a stroke caused by vasculitis from chicken pox that he had 5 months prior, and he was beginning to show signs of movement again, eventually being able to move his arms and legs, talk as normal and skipping down the hospital corridor holding his dad's hand.
I am so grateful for all the hospital staff at Glasgow Children's Hospital who got him back to his feet, the neurologists, physiotherapists, nurses, and family support who got us through the hardest, most terrifying time of all of our lives. Dr Brauklass' care and professionalism and the nurses care were outstanding.
I aim to raise awareness of childhood strokes over the years now as it's rare but shows it can happen at any age.
