"Understanding neurodiverse issues"

About: Leverndale Hospital / Mental Health New Stobhill Hospital / Mackinnon House

(as a parent/guardian),

Can I ask a question? Are the staff that work within mental health and who work for your MHAU departments at Leverndale and Stobhill are they trained and do they have full understanding and knowledge in neurodiverse conditions?

I have a family member who has EUPD and a neurodiverse condition, and as a concerned family member I am not happy that my family members EUPD gets blamed for everything, when they are lacking in support in regards to their neurodiversity. And we have been asking for a number of years to bring services who understand the neurodiveristy in but we are being told no.

They were told twice recently that duty would phone them the next morning, and they weren't called. My family member phoned and had to make contact and was given abuse off the duty worker, and was told we don't need to pick up the phone, they know where we are.

A neurodivergent individual likes routine and structure and rules, and instructions and the lack of communication between all these small departments is shocking.

In May my family member was told they were an issue and a problem that they were their CMHT's issue and problem.

My family member who has been sadly let down thinks they are a problem, and has sadly been struggling with suicidal ideation, for weeks and Police have been 110% amazing with my family member they are a credit to police Scotland and I will be forever grateful to the officers who have gone out their way to help us get my family member better. They have saved my family member's life and even after their most serious attempt last year they were allowed to go home after being in A&E. I can't understand why they weren't kept in or sent into inpatient but all I'm hearing is theirs a bed crisis.

There is a crisis outside hospital walls, people are struggling and people are dying through suicide. People are stuck in inpatient beds, that want to go home, but their is no support for patients who aren't in hospital and who are left to their own devices outside in the community.

MHAU and the CMHT team don't seem to know how to help my family member.

I feel the problem is, staff need to understand neurodiverse issues, and they need better understanding and training. and this includes CMHT staff.

And they need to start looking at the inpatient bed crisis, why can't services look at private hospitals or send patients across Scotland if they have a bed, they do this in England.
