"Forever grateful for the support of this team"

About: Children's Specialist Health Services / Neurodevelopmental Service (NDS)

(as a parent/guardian),

During a routine operation at the Sick Children’s Hospital my son who has complex physical and mental needs had experience some complications which left him traumatised and refusing to eat or drink. Sadly the care we received within the ward was outrageous and not person-centred, leaving myself as a Mum feeling helpless.

Terrified and not sure where to turn to I reached out to the team who know my Son best, the Neuro Developmental Dieticians Lorraine and Lisa who we see at clinic on a fairly routine basis at Newmains.

Both of these dietitians heard and validated my concerns and followed through by making multiple calls to the ward and sharing experiences of my son. If it was not for both of these nurses working together to cover shifts to liaise with the ward I’m unsure where we would be at this moment in time.

Both these ladies ensured not only voice was heard as a parent/carer but my son too who is non verbal!

And the follow up from the ladies post-op has been incredible

Forever grateful for the support of this team and I hope this review leads to them getting some recognition for their hard work!

Dear Parent,

I am delighted to read your lovely Care Opinion about 2 of our dietitians, Lisa and Lorraine. The Neurodevelopmental Service is very lucky to have such dedicated staff and I am pleased they were able to support you and your son.

Hospital can be such a scary time for our young people and a worrying time for parents. I'm glad you felt comfortable in seeking the support you needed and that Lisa and Lorraine were able to offer this.

As a service we work hard to hear the voice of our young people, however that might be and I really appreciate you highlighting such positive work.

I hope your son is doing better.

Thank you again and very best wishes,

Suzanne Shields
