"One staff member gave cause for concern"

About: Blackpool Victoria Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as a carer),

All untrained staff and recently qualified staff nurses were excellent.

One staff member gave some cause for concern in the advice they gave.

Not only did they suggest to my mother that all swelling would need to be released via her surgical wound (making her anxious she would erupt like a volcano, until she was reassured by the registrar this was not the case). They also suggested that there was no chance of post surgical infection for 14 days post op.

My mother felt that their bedside manner with both her and other patients left a lot to be desired. Rather than applauding the efforts of patients rehabilitating post operatively (other staff members using phrases like "well done", "you're doing great" and "that's really good", this staff member chose phrases along the lines of "you can do better" "we've done everything we can for you" "try harder" and "put more effort in".

I find it very concerning that this nurse could be seem as a role model for the newly qualified staff.
