"Made to feel that I don't know what's best for my child"

About: Causeway Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as a parent/guardian),

I am a young mummy so I usually am made to feel indifferent and that I don’t know what’s best for my child and that’s exactly how I was made to feel in the a&e. The doctors I saw in the a&e basically told me my baby wasn’t sick enough (he’s 3 weeks old with the whooping cough and was experiencing some very harsh symptoms). They said that his symptoms weren’t worrying enough and we had to sit in the hospital for 4 hours waiting for an antibiotic to be prescribed.

Hello Savanna

My name is Victoria McCrory and I am the Assistant Clinical Services Manager for Causeway ED. I am sorry to hear your child has been unwell recently and had to attend the ED dept.

I appreciate attending the ED with a sick child can be a worrying and stressful experience, and I am very sorry to hear that you felt indifferent and as though you did not know what was best for your child. As the assistant clinical services manager I encourage all staff to treat patients and their families with respect, kindness and compassion, I apologise for your poor experience whilst in the ED.

I also apologise for the wait which you experienced in the department. The department has remained under sustained pressures for quite some time, and unfortunately waiting times are longer than we would like or aim to achieve.

Thank you for taking the time to leave this feedback. All feedback is important to us. Less positive feedback can help staff reflect on the care they provide and assist staff with improving their practice.

I will ensure that your feedback is shared with all staff within the department for their personal learning and improvement.

I hope your child continues to make a strong recovery.

Yours Sincerely

Victoria McCrory
