"Thank you from the bottom of my heart"

About: Trauma & orthopaedics / Orthopaedic National Treatment Centre

(as a service user),

I recently under went a total knee replacement at the Orthopaedic National Treatment Centre at The Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy. At all stages , including pre-assessment, I was treated with dignity, compassion and professionalism. The staff were excellent and looked after me at every stage and took time to listen to my concerns and questions. I felt confident that I was being given the best of care and that I was in safe hands throughout the whole process.

Pre-assessment was very thorough, both from the nursing staff and Mr Annan, the surgical consultant. I was fortunate enough to be offered a cancellation which meant that I was admitted for surgery about a fortnight later. Admission was very efficient and within 2 hours of arrival I was with the anaesthetist being prep'd for surgery. Historical events meant that I was very anxious about surgery but I felt that all the staff responded reassuringly to my concerns, making me feel heard and supported, wow, I felt like I was being treated like a human being.

The spinal block and sedation were amazing, none of the side effects of a general anaesthetic so when I came to after surgery I just felt like I had had a lovely little sleep.

Mr Annan did a great job getting my leg back into alignment. I'm sure it can't have been a straight forward procedure but I think he did a great job. I'm still working on getting it moving and increasing flexion but I guess that bit's up to me and my body's response to the surgery.

Also, a special shout out to the ward staff looking after me while the spinal block was wearing off. It took a little longer than expected but I was well looked after. Although I had initially been admitted as a day patient the decision was made for me to stay in overnight which I was actually quite glad of.

Discharge went well and I was home before I knew it. Once home I was able to contact the National Treatment Centre staff between 8am and 8pm with any concerns about the wound dressing, I felt well supported throughout.

This is probably the most positive experience of a hospital admission that I have ever had. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
