I was recently admitted to the Royal Victoria Hospital Belfast for scheduled heart surgery. I needed an aortic valve replacement and was able to avail of this under the NHS.
I'm in my 50s but I'd never been admitted to hospital before, so I didn't really know what to expect. I got through the surgery thankfully and was nearly three weeks in hospital for the early part of my recovery.
I felt the organisation, attention and professionalism of the staff was top class throughout. Working in this environment day to day at the frontline of the health service must bring its ups and downs, and I am very thankful to the staff of ward 5a for the positive experience under their care.
I am continuing to recover at home but this stay has given me a greater appreciation for those who work in the public health system .
