"Did not even have any doctor on"

About: Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Unscheduled Care Omagh Primary Care Complex / Emergency Care and Medicine Services Western Health & Social Care Trust / Urgent Care

(as a relative),

My husband recently had a collapse and loss of consciousness at home. Having a history of heart attack, I called out of hours. My husband received a call back very fast and doctor told him to go to A and E. My husband said he didn't want to be sitting there for hours. The doctor said he could go to Omagh hospital where he would be seen quickly. So we got a driver and went to Omagh from Derry.

On arrival at Omagh Hospital nurse said they were sorry but he should never have been sent here, this is nurse led and they don't have any doctor here to assess him. So they advised us go to Altnagelvin. We did this and my husband was checked by doctor and tests and ecg done.

We were grateful for all the medical help my husband was given and that his collapse was not heart related. . My issue is - why did a doctor tell him he would be seen at Omagh when Omagh did not even have any doctor on?

It was a stressful event and the long journey added more anxiety. I am writing this so that it can be looked into and I hope this doesn't happen to anyone else.

Dear Sunshine13,

Thank you for sharing your recent experience of your contact with the GP Out of Hours Service delivered by Western Urgent Care. We are sorry your experience was not a positive one that we strive to deliver.

We would appreciate if you could kindly contact us directly to share some more information on your contact so that we can investigate the matter further and ideally learn from your experience so that it may help someone else in future. Please email our General Manager with the details of your complaint; deborahm.ward@westerntrust.hscni.net

Both the Urgent Care & Treatment Centre (UCTC) and the Cardiac Assessment Unit (CAU) located in the Omagh Hospital site are Nurse-Led services. There will be Western Urgent Care Doctors working in the shared department during the GP Out of Hours service operating hours. As an immediate action we will remind all of our Doctors and Nurses that the UCTC and CAU are Nurse-led and advise them to ensure Patients are aware in advance of travelling there.

Finally, we hope that your husband has now returned to better health.

Kind Regards

Western Urgent Care Team
