Having suffered from Osteoarthritis in my right knee for the past 12 years I needed to seek medical intervention last year due to the ongoing pain I have been suffering. I was referred by my GP in NHS Highland, to my nearest hospital which is in the Greater Glasgow & Clyde area. Early in 2024 I attended a consultation at Inverclyde Royal Infirmary, where I had an initial assessment and X-rays taken of both knees.
I was referred for an MRI Scan which I had again at Inverclyde. 6 weeks later I had another consultation to discuss my options and it was recommended that I undergo a full knee replacement. I underwent my pre-operative checks while I was there and asked if I had any holidays planned in the next 9 weeks, which I had not, and haven't booked any since. 8 weeks later I received a letter from Admin at GGC telling me I had been seen by the wrong health board and was now being referred to NHS Highland putting me to the back of the queue.
Because I live right on the border between two health boards, and the nearest large hospital in NHS Highland is more than 2 hours away, NHS Highland pay NHSGGC to take those patients from Helensburgh and surrounding areas as the nearest hospital is 10 minutes away.
Now I have to go through all that pain and turmoil for another 58-60 weeks just to see another consultant.
