"My day surgery"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / General surgery

(as the patient),

I'm almost 70, my first question is why does everyone have to arrive at 07.00 when the lounge is so small? I'm not asking for a bigger room just a better system of arrivals. Everyone that day except me brought a plus one, my wife wanted to accompany me but your advice sheet tells the patient the plus one should not stay, so when l returned after having to complete a form there was nowhere to sit so I stood in the entrance corridor that is as a nurse said totally unacceptable. I am already in a stressful situation so I was given a hard plastic chair, again totally unacceptable.

Then the wait, my letter told me I was on the morning list. Well, I don't remember that going to plan, and bear in mind I had not eaten since 23.00. I do understand that operations don't always run to schedule, but getting up at 05.00 to have a shower, get my sister-in-law to get me to Treliske for 07.00, and then sit around sipping lukewarm water ( a water cooler might help) and breathing in other people's germs in a very warm room does not inspire confidence for what is about to come.

Mr Aziz and his team were excellent they were helpful and informative, especially the anaesthetist.

The recovery team were also brilliant and rang my wife to let her know I was to stay overnight, so I went to PCU.

The nursing staff on PCU were amazing nothing seemed too much, were helpful and a good laugh which is what you need on  ward.

But and there is always a but, you have a very strict rule that there is a no smoking policy in the hospital and on hospital grounds, while my stay was short, two patients on the ward were in and out to go for a smoke all night long disturbing the sleep of the rest of us.

So two rules, and important ones - don't bring a plus one and no smoking - were not enforced, so I don't think your rules are worth the paper they are written on. Unfortunately there is no star rating as on other websites so as to differentiate between the two nursing and admin.

So the operating team, recovery and ward nursing were brilliant, the admin, well I think I will leave that.

Dear Penguin one,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us, I am sorry that on this occasion, it wasn't an overly positive one, acknowledging the kind comments you have made regarding the staff who looked after you.

In order for us to make the correct department aware of your feedback, would you be able to reply to this message to tell us which lounge you visited. We have a few dotted around our hospital and I want to make sure we send it to the correct one. Alternatively, you can call us on 01872 252793 or email us: rcht.patientengagement@nhs.net.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience, I hope that we will be able to get your feedback to the correct department so they will be able to make changes where possible.

Best wishes,

Jess
