"Waited there for over 4 hours"

About: Royal Lancaster Infirmary / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

Thank you for the opportunity to give feedback. It was my first visit to a local hospital but I left it absolutely despondent.

I arrived at A&E 8.35pm with a deep cut on my finger. It was deep, and I felt I needed either stera strips or a couple of stitches as it was on the lower joint. After registration, I saw the triage nurse in the waiting room. I asked if I could get stitches or stera strip. I was asked to wait in the waiting area. I waited there for over 4 hours. Everyone who was in the waiting room seemed to be seen by the medical staff, as was everyone who came in after me.

I fully appreciate that my situation was nowhere near as severe as other people, so I waited patiently. However after not even being spoken to I went to the reception and asked to see the nurse. They looked up my details and said that I needed to see the doctor. Asked if they had any idea how much longer. You're 4th in the queue, and it could be 3 more hours. That would have taken it to an 8 hour wait for a deep cut finger. I'm sorry but I feel this was excessive in the extreme as I feel this could have been resolved by a doctor looking at it for 10 seconds at most. But nothing . I informed the nice receptionist that I cannot wait any longer, as if other patients arrived with more important emergencies, then it could be 8 more hours. I went home and the following day got a plaster from the local store. Not ideal. I am not one to push myself up the queue but would have thought I would have been seen, for such a mild matter.
