"Staff were unfailingly attentive, kind and professional"

About: General Surgery / Emergency Surgical Unit Ward 6A Northern Ireland Ambulance Service / Emergency ambulance response Royal Victoria Hospital / Accident & Emergency Royal Victoria Hospital / Radiology

(as a service user),

I became very unwell at my GP surgery on the morning of a Tuesday in mid May 2024. The practice doctors, nurses and reception all staff all responded immediately and well offering me assessment and reassurance. I was taken to hospital by ambulance.

The two paramedics who attended for me were friendly, calm, reassuring and professional in their response to me and offered me immediate pain relief. I am very grateful for their skills and their kindness.

I was admitted to the Emergency Department which - while extremely overcrowded - took urgent steps for me to receive X Rays, CT scans, fluids and pain relief. While the Department was clearly under immense pressure I was treated again with a high degree of professionalism, kindness and concern and witnessed the same level of care being provided to others in an intensely challenging environment.

I was admitted then to a ward where I remained for 5 days. The medical, nursing and domestic staff were unfailingly attentive, kind and professional, giving me good, clear explanations of what was going on. I was impressed by the constancy of their attention to me - giving twice daily reviews and four hourly checks and observations.

While I am very aware of the extreme pressures on services and the tremendous demands placed on staff in the Emergency Department in particular I want to thank and to commend all of the staff involved in my care which was second to none and a consistent display of the things that are most precious about the NHS.

Thank you everyone.

Good afternoon Richardd437,

I would like to begin by thanking you for taking the time to share your experience of the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service. As an organisation we are committed to consistently showing compassion, professionalism and respect for the patients we care for, so it was heartening to learn of the approach of the two paramedics. Feedback such as this lifts the morale of the whole organisation in what is a challenging period. I hope you are recovering well.

Best wishes

Neil
