I would like to share my positive experience of maternity services and community support which I have received in the Western Trust since the birth of my first baby 2 weeks ago.
I cannot thank all the staff enough for their kindness and support in the maternity and labour ward. In particular to the midwives June and Ciara who delivered my baby boy in early June - the same date as of both their birthdays! It was a special morning celebrating 3 birthdays in the room! They were both excellent at their job and the skills it takes to support a Mammy through labour and birth is unbelievable. I am forever grateful!
Following my discharge from hospital, I had been planning to breastfeed but had an initial delay in my milk coming in. The care and support I received from the community midwives was excellent at this time, in particular Claudine and Cora. The extra time they spent with me as a new Mammy wanting to try breastfeeding despite those initial difficulties were definitely to thank for me continuing with it. They provided extra visits and kept a close eye on his weight, and made referrals on to both the infant feeding lead and the tongue tie clinic. At 6 days old we received a visit from Nicola the Infant Feeding Lead. She spent an extremely valuable 1.5 hours with us, teaching positions and providing me with tips on what to do, and also loaning the use of a pump from the Trust. By the end of her visit things had clicked and we were managing really well! The next morning we received a call from Wendy in the tongue tie clinic, as the community midwives had suspected a slight tongue tie affecting his latch. Wendy offered us an appointment that morning and we went in to see her. She confirmed a tongue tie and we agreed to have this snipped. We were very pleased to notice an immediate improvement in his latch and range of tongue movement, which was a great success.
I have to commend the excellent service provided in the community to support breast feeding mammies and I am very thankful and grateful for all of the support and advice which we received. It is a fantastic service and I hope my experience goes some way to reassure other mammies of the brilliant support which is available.
"hope my experience reassures other mammies"
