"Gran's dementia story"

About: Older People's Services / Arbroath Older People's Services

(as a relative),

I won’t lie and say that this has been an easy journey and there have been many hurdles along the way. I personally feel that the gps and hospitals could do more to help people with dementia but unfortunately I feel they get easily lost in the system. We have experienced hospitals wanting to put them home without care plans etc in place or gps not monitoring weight properly and saying that a patient has full capacity when they obviously do not as they can no longer recognise family members, work a remote control or do simple daily tasks.

What I would say though is that with the proper care assessor in place the process is made so much easier and they are worth their weight in gold. The help that Emma has given us has been amazing, my gran has lost no more weight, ensure drinks have been put in place and monitored daily and Scotia care have been put in place at tea time. Emma has also tried to get my gran to go to clubs but unfortunately she isn’t up for this.

Scotia care have been fantastic; the girls phone if gran isn’t there and they even assessed her and let the nurses know when she had a fall then contacted me, Emma even contacted Scotia and asked for the tea times to be swapped and Scotia managed to do this. This service has personally been a breath of fresh air for me and I could not praise the team enough.

Thank you.

Hello thank you very much for taking the time to provide your feedback with regards to you and your Gran's journey. My name is Jillian Richmond and I am the service leader for the social work services and teams where Emma works. It is lovely to hear that Emma has been such a help to you and your Gran is improving as a result - this is so important in terms of the support Emma is providing, I will certainly pass your feedback onto Emma. It is great to hear your Gran is also benefitting from the support provided by Scotia Care and I will ask Emma to pass your comments on to them also.

I am really sorry to hear there are parts of your Gran's journey which have not gone so well. We are about to start work reviewing our dementia pathways following the publication of the Dementia Strategy for Scotland - Everyone's Story and I will ensure we capture your comments in this work. You can also complete a care opinion story to feedback to the service areas where you feel there have been challenges.

Thank you very much for your feedback, it is very reassuring to hear your positive experience from Emma and scotia care.
