"Failed medical termination"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Accident & Emergency Sandyford Clinic The Princess Royal Maternity Unit / Gynaecology The Princess Royal Maternity Unit / Ultrasound Scan (Maternity)

(as a service user),

I went to the Sandyford (Glasgow) for a termination of an early pregnancy, I was given tablets for a medical termination as I was told there was a 4 week wait for a surgical termination.

I took the tablets as instructed, had bleeding, cramping and all the symptoms I was told about.

I waited 2 weeks and took a pregnancy test as instructed, which was negative,  and received a text asking if I wanted to book in for the coil as I had indicated previously this was my preferred contraception.

I did and attended the Sandyford (park head) and was initially turned away stating this Sandyford was not my catchment to then be phoned and asked to come in the next day, as they made a mistake, I attended the next day.

During the procedure the nurse stated that they were concerned about the amount of blood, then asked if I had a negative pregnancy test after the procedure was complete.

Over the next few days I began having cramps, bleeding and pain which I was told was normal, these continued to become worse and I had no energy, I contacted out of hours and attended, then onto a and e and then finally onto gynaecology.

At the gynaecology ward at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary they were wonderful, they scanned me and this is when they informed me I was still pregnant. The nursing staff were wonderful, kind, compassionate and informative.

This has been a devastating development, this was a tremendously difficult decision to make and for it not only not to work, but for the specialist service, the Sandyford, who I was in the care of, not to notice that I was still pregnant before inserting a coil it's absolutely shocking to say the least.

Now I need to start this process all over again, when my mental wellbeing is already at a low to now try and find the energy, the emotions and the mental strength to go through this again.
