"A little more patience, understanding and compassion would have gone a long way"

About: Woodend Hospital / Radiology

(as the patient),

I recently had an MRI appointment at the Hutchison MRI, Woodend Hospital, Aberdeen.

I spoke to the receptionist and she was very pleasant to deal with. A short time later I was called for my appointment by a member of staff I believe was a Radiologist, although this was not confirmed to me.

This was my first experience of have an MRI scan and I told the member of staff that I was apprehensive and quite nervous. They were quite matter of fact but didn't really offer any reassurance, compassion or advice.

I was taken to the scanner and told the member of staff that I was claustrophobic and didn't realise that I would be inside the chamber. I agreed to comply with what was necessary and the procedures began.

In short, it was a very difficult experience and not one I would wish to repeat. I appreciate that this is the member of staff's day job but a little more patience, understanding and compassion would have gone a long way.

I have worked in public facing roles for over 40 years, and I know to treat others how you would like to be treated yourself. I don't want anyone to lose their job and this is not a complaint but merely my personal experience.

I didn't feel I was treated as an individual and with care and compassion.

Hi John89,

I'm Ross, the Unit Support Manager for Radiology, NHS Grampian. I was sorry to learn of the experience you shared when attending for an MRI scan at Woodend Hospital, and how you felt we didn't treat you as an individual and provide the compassionate approach our patients deserve.

I have shared your experience with our MRI team and our MRI colleagues have been reminded to be more reassuring to the patients, especially when they mention that they are claustrophobic.

I would like to ensure that we learn from the experience you have shared as much as possible, and therefore, if you could contact me on 01224 550786, I would be happy to note the specifics of your appointment in order for us to investigate more thoroughly.

Please accept my apology on behalf of the Radiology for the experience you shared and I hope you feel reassured that the Service is keen to learn from it and improve.

Kind regards,

Ross
